Who We Are
We are a study and discussion group offering a safe space to explore sexuality as well as all life's issues in a spiritual context. The "group" has been meeting every week at The Center: the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Services Center, in New York City, for 15 years. It is in no way meant to replace church going, but rather be a helpful addition for those who want a place to discuss issues and topics they may not feel comfortable discussing in a regular church setting.
In one of our recent meetings, we discussed the purpose for a Gay and Lesbian Christian Science Group. If you'd like to know more about us, check out our journal archive of notes from recent meetings. The archive is a good place to look for notes from previous weeks. Please have a look and give us some feedback to let us know what you think. As we think these are topics of interest to all, we hope to soon offer a page of responses sent in to us by readers.
If you're just curious about Christian Science and would like to know more, or are a long time Scientist we'd love you to come by. We also welcome anyone spiritually minded with thoughts to share, regardless of religious background. Over the years we've had many visitors, ranging from Anglicans to Zen practitioners.
Meetings are suspended until The Center is open again.
The Center is located in the heart of Greenwich Village, just west of Seventh Avenue. You can reach The Center easily by subway: on the IRT Broadway/Seventh Avenue line, take the IRT 1, 2, 3 or 9 (the red line) to 14th Street at Seventh Avenue; on the IND line, take the A, C or E (the blue line) to 14th Street at Eighth Avenue.
The format of our meetings is as follows:
- We begin with readings which all members are invited to bring in as they wish. All readings are from the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy's writings and are on a topic chosen by the group. (Mary Baker Eddy is the founder and discoverer of Christian Science).
- Next we open up for discussion, testimonies and expressions of gratitude in Christian Science by any who would like to share.
- The last part of the meeting is reserved for ongoing issues and topics of interest to our members, from events of the News to events in their lives. Whatever we discuss, the focus is on exploring and discovering the spiritual, transformative Truth to heal every situation.
On many of the pages here, we point to citations from various sources. Unless otherwise specified, the Bible references are from the King James Version. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and other writings by Mary Baker Eddy, can be found at your local Christian Science Reading Room, or at the homepage of The First Church of Christ, Scientist.
The term "the books" refers to the pastor of The Church of Christ, Scientist: The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy.
